Estadísticas fiables nos dicen que en Ucrania hay casi doce mil niños que no tienen hogar. La mayor parte de ellos sufren malos tratos en sus familias y prefieren vivir en la calle pasando frío y hambre. Este hecho trae nefastas consecuencias sociales. Cada día hay más niños en la calle, aumenta la delincuencia debido al consumo de la droga y el alcohol.

En Dim Ditey intentamos “prevenir” los problemas sociales de marginación, pobreza y abandono de los niños. Para evitar que sean abandonados, trabajamos con “niño-familia” en la:

Para ello, se realizan clases extraescolares totalmente gratuitas. Pagamos a los profesores -estudiantes la mayoría latinos- y al personal que trabaja para la misión. Se imparten clases de español, francés, inglés, música, canto, danza, teatro, defensa personal, informática, manualidades, pintura y dibujo.

Los niños acuden cada día a Dim Ditey después del horario oficial y son instruidos en las materias que previamente han elegido, de 16,00 a 18.30 horas; los sábados de 10,00 a 16.30 horas.

Se dan charlas de formación a los padres de los niños y nos ocupamos de las madres solteras.

Este internado esta muy apartado del centro ciudad de Vinnytza a 50 Km. No recibe visitas ni ayudas, por no ser fácil el acceso a él. El edificio es enorme para 120 niños con sus cuidadoras que viven en él. En tiempos de la revolución Bolchevique fue una cárcel.

La impresión al visitarlo es agradable porque está todo muy limpio y cuidado. Pero se cae el alma a ver que los sanitarios y duchas son horrorosos, sin privacidad, una habitación abierta, los sanitarios alineados y sin muros, sin lavabos. Para ducharse, hay un pilón y basta (ver fotos).

Pedimos al director que nos hiciera un presupuesto para poder construir unos baños en condiciones, tanto en los dormitorios como en los de la escuela. No se mostró ambicioso, mas bien recatado y temeroso, pues construir o renovar requiere muchos permisos, por eso se limito a pedir para renovar sin mayores obras, los sanitarios completos, hacer muros bajos y puerta en cada uno, hacer duchas y un calentador de agua para ducha o bañera de la enfermería. De igual manera renovar y restauras los sanitarios del recinto escuela.

Los dormitorios tienen unas camas de muelles antiquísimas, colchones sucios, malísimos para renovarlos todos. La calefacción es baja, pasan fío en la noche, por eso nos dijo que si podíamos buscarle ropa de cama, sábanas y mantas, que eso si es urgente.

El régimen del internado es totalmente cerrado. En el reciben las clases, de manera que casi no salen de allí, a no ser que algún familiar los lleve de viernes a domingo. Por eso nuestras visitas les alegan tanto.

Los niños que viven ahí son abandonados de sus progenitores, por incapacidad física o psíquica y por lo tantos desprovistos de “la patria potestad”. Padres alcohólicos, drogadictos, madres solteras sin trabajo o niños totalmente huérfanos. Ante este problema el alcalde los recluta para protegerlos, darles educación y alimentarlos, desde los 6 a los 16 años. Este es el denominador común de santísimos internados que existen en Ucrania.

El derecho la supervivencia y el desarrollo subrayan la importancia fundamental que significa asegurar el acceso a los servicios básicos y la igualdad de oportunidades para que los niños y las niñas logren alcanzar un desarrollo completo.

Para ayudar a los niños a restablecer su salud de las secuelas de la catástrofe de Chernobil, que sigue haciendo estragos, y como complemento de su educación integral y su desarrollo como seres humanos, cada año, con la ayuda de otras asociaciones, no de nuestra asociación, se prepara un grupo de niños entre 6 y 18 años para la acogida en familias fuera de Ucrania.

Como ya existen otras asociaciones que se encargan de la acogida en España durante el periodo vacacional, nuestra asociación quiere dar un paso más: conseguir que los niños que no pueden venir a España puedan disfrutar de vacaciones no solo en España sino también en Ucrania. Que tengan las vacaciones en su propio país puede ser muy beneficioso también.

En Dim Ditey pensamos que todo niño tiene derecho a ser feliz. Entre otras actividades para conseguirlo, intentamos que tengan vacaciones. Todos sabemos lo importante que es para un niño el juego, las actividades al aire libre, el salir de su rutina diaria.

En el verano de 2008 se buscó que los niños no se quedaran sin vacaciones y este objetivo se ha conseguido también en 2009 y 2010, con algunas novedades. Pueden visitar la sección de 'Fotos' para tener más información e imágenes.

El 11 de julio salieron hacia España 54 niños de Dim Ditey. ¿Vacaciones? No como tales, aunque los niños van ilusionados, siempre es Chernobil el causante de todo. De estos viajes a España se ocupan otras asociaciones.

Dim Ditey ha tomado como hermana esta Escuela Internado de Zhmerinka. Los niños desean establecer lazos de amistad y de intercambios culturales. Por eso, decidimos acoger en verano a algunos niños de Zhmerinka en Dim Ditey. Se preparó un fabuloso programa de actividades para el verano. Por grupos, pasaron unos días fantásticos en Kiev, alojados en Dim Ditey. A su cuidado, estuvieron tres jóvenes ucranianas, Valentina, Olga y María, profesoras y alumnas en Dim Ditey, con otro monitor, Yokiro, de Dim Ditey a la cabeza de cada expedición, más un monitor el internado que acompañó a cada grupo.

De esta manera, los niños del internado salieron de su 'cárcel' (no salen nunca de allí), conocieron otros sitios e hicieron otras actividades que les ayudarán a su formación humana. Visitaron Kiev, comieron en un McDonalds, tomaron un helado, jugaron al pin pon, fútbol, con el ordenador, visitaron museos, se bañaron en el río, dieron un paseo en barco.. Estas actividades, tan naturales y habituales para cualquier niño, no lo son para ellos.

Para poder llevar a cabo este proyecto de llevar a Kiev a pasar unos días a lo niños del orfanato, fue necesario acondicionar la sala multiusos que actualmente no está del todo terminada. Además de la obra en sí, fue necesario comprar camas plegables, ropa de cama, toallas, productos de higiene, así como recaudar para los viajes, seguros, excursiones, comidas, visitas a museos, etc.

- Un grupo de niños fue a los Cárpatos. Son niños que durante todo el año acuden a la casa de Dim Ditey en Kiev, más un grupo del orfanato.

- Un grupo de niños del orfanato estuvo en Kiev pasando unos días. fue necesario acondicionar la sala multiusos y recaudar para los gastos de esta actividad. Pueden ver algunas fotos en la sección 'Fotos' del menú de arriba, apartado 'Vacaciones 2010'.

NOTA: Actualmente estamos recaudando fondos para comprar una furgoneta necesaria para poder transportar las ayudas de alimentos y ropa que recibimos de la gente y también para poder conducir a los niños en pequeños grupos a lugares que mejoren su salud.

Hemos visto furgonetas Renault, su capacidad podría remediarnos este problema de transporte. Pedimos vuestra pequeña aportación para poder comprarla. Hasta ahora hemos tenido que rechazar muchos posibles envíos de ayuda humanitaria, también de material sanitario, medicamentos y aparatos para los disminuidos físicos por no tener como transportarlos.

Hasta el presente hemos utilizado el pequeño jeep del subdirector de Dim Ditey, pero lo hemos sobrecargado tanto que se han roto piezas, y últimamente hemos tenido que cambiar la caja de cambios. Todo esto nos cuesta mucho y si no tenemos cuidado dentro de unos cuantos viajes este vehículo no servirá para nada.

Reliable statistics tell us that in Ukraine there are nearly twelve thousand children who are homeless. Most of them suffer abuse from their families and prefer to live on the street with cold and hunger. This brings dire social consequences. With more and more children in the street, crime increases due to the consumption of drugs and alcohol.

In Dim Ditey we aim “to prevent"social problems of marginalization, poverty and neglect. To avoid being stranded, we work with “child and family"in:

For this purpose, all activities are offered as totally free extracurricular classes. We pay the teachers, mostly Latino students, and staff working for the mission. Classes include Spanish, French, English, music, song, dance, theater, defense, computer, crafts, painting and drawing.

The children come to Dim Ditey every day after their official schooling and are instructed in the matters that they have previously chosen, from 4:00 to 6:30PM (16:00-18:30), and Saturdays from 10:00AM to 4:30PM (10:00-16:30).

Parenting workshops are held training the parents of these children and special care is given in regard to single mothers.

This orphanage is far from downtown Vinnytza at about 30 mi (50 km) visits do not happen often, nor is much aid received because it is not easy to access. The building is huge for 120 children and their care givers who live there. At the time of the Bolshevik revolution, it was a prison.

The first impression is pleasant to visitors because everything is very clean and well cared for. But the soul falls when it sees that the bathrooms and showers are horrible, lacking privacy, an open room, toilets aligned without walls, and without toilet basins. To shower, there are just basins (see photos).

We have asked the director to make us a budget to build some bathrooms for both the dorm rooms and the school. He was not ambitious, rather modest and fearful, for construction or renovation needs many permits. So they have only asked to renovate what is currently there: to add low walls and door for each toilet and a heater for showers or bath water in the infirmary. Similarly he has asked to renovate and restore the restrooms of the school.

The bedrooms have a very old spring beds, dirty and lousy mattresses, that all need to be replaced. There is barely reliable heating, not enough to trust through the night, so we were asked if we could look for bedding, sheets and blankets. This is an urgent need for winter.

The orphanage is completely shut off from the outside world. Since classes are held on the campus, children almost never get to leave, unless a family member takes them from Friday to Sunday. Because of this, our visits make them very happy.

Children who live there are abandoned by their parents, due to physical or mental disability and therefore devoid of "custody." Alcoholics, drug addicts, single mothers, unemployed or totally orphaned children. Faced with this problem, the mayor has enlisted this institution to protect them, provide education and feeding, from 6 to 16 years. This is the common denominator of most religious orphanages that exist in Ukraine.

The right to survival and development underscore the fundamental importance which means ensuring access to basic services and equal opportunities for children to achieve to reach their full development.

· Heating system. FINALLY! They have heating! In Ukraine winter temperatures drop 20 degrees below zero C (-4 degrees F.) and these children have been years without heating. Eventually, with help from the Cordoba association “Nest of Hope”, it was able to collect money for heating systems in the main rooms of the building.

· Bathrooms remodeled. They have been successfully remodeled and updated (see photos), one bathroom with help from the Cordoba association 'Nest of Hope'.

· Replacement of the beds. Besides Dim Ditey donations, the Creatia Foundation has made a donation to help buy new beds and mattresses.

To help children restore their health in the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster, that continues to wreak havoc, and in addition to their education and their development as human beings, each year, with the help of other associations, not of our association, a group of children between 6 and 18 are hosted by families outside Ukraine.

Since other associations already exist that provide an opportunity to be hosted in Spain during the holiday period, our partnership wants to go one step further: to insure that children who can not go to Spain, don’t need to go away, but can enjoy a vacation in Ukraine. Going on vacation in their own country can also be just as beneficial.

At Dim Ditey, we believe that every child has the right to be happy. Among other activities that promote this happiness, we aim to give each child a vacation as well. We all know how important it is for children to play, do activities outdoors, and to take a break from their daily routines.

The goal of the summer of 2008 was that children not be left without a vacation and this objective was also achieved in 2009, with some news.You can visit the section on 'Pictures' for more info.

On July 11, 54 children from Dim Ditey went to Spain. On vacation? Not as such, although children are excited, it is always the cause of all Chernobyl. These trips to Spain are financially covered by other associations.

But in Ukraine there are places devoid of radioactivity, such as the idyllic mountains of the Carpathians. This year 60 Dim Ditey children will vacation there and 10 from the Zhmerinka orphanage. This is the same activity as we did last year (you can see the story in 'Holiday 2009').

Dim Ditey has taken Zhmerinka Boarding School as its sister. The children want to establish ties of friendship and cultural exchanges. So, in the summer we decided to welcome in some children from Zhmerinka to Dim Ditey. We prepared a great program of activities for the summer. The groups spent a few fantastic days in Kiev, hosted by Dim Ditey. Caring for the children, from July 20 to August 22 were three young Ukrainians Valentina, Olga, and Maria, teachers and students at Dim Ditey, along with another monitor, Yokiro, also from Dim Ditey, who headed of each outing, as an intern that accompanied each group.

In this way, children from the boarding school left their 'jail' (they usually never come out of there), they met elsewhere and did other activities that help their formation as human beings. They visited Kiev, ate at a McDonalds, they had ice cream, played table tennis, football, used the computer, visited museums, went swimming in the river, took a boat ride .. These activities, as natural and normal for any child, are not for them.

To carry out this project to bring the orphanage children to Kiev for a few days, we had to set up the current multipurpose room that is not quite finished. Besides the work itself, was necessary to purchase folding beds, bed linens, towels, hygiene products, and raise funds for travel, insurance, excursions, meals, and visits to museums.

- A group of children went to the Carpathians. Throughout the year, these children come to the Dim Ditey House in Kiev, as a part of the group from the orphanage.

- A group of children at the orphanage was in Kiev and spent a few days. It was necessary to set up the multipurpose room and collect for the costs of these activities.

NOTE: We are currently raising funds to buy a van needed to aid transport of food and clothing we receive from people and also for driving small groups of the children to places that improve their health.

To date we have used a small jeep from the Dim Ditey deputy, but we are overloaded with broken pieces, and recently we have had to change the gearbox. All this costs a lot and if we are not careful, in a few more trips, this car it will be useless.

We have been looking at a Renault van; the capacity could remedy this problem of transportation. We ask for your small contribution to buy one. So far we have had to reject many potential humanitarian aid shipments, medical supplies, and also medicines and appliances for the physically handicapped because we do not have adequate transport.
